Post-hoc analysis showed that this unexpected relationship may be due to the way sexual risk was measured, as an alternative model specifying casual unprotected sex as the outcome showed no positive relationship between sexual communication and risk.įindings indicate that young people with anxious attachment are less confident communicating about sexual health. However, contrary to predictions, greater sexual communication was related to higher risk. Sexual communication mediated the relationship between attachment anxiety and sexual risk. The cross-sectional model was tested using Structural Equation Modelling. The present study sought to test a comprehensive psychosocial model of sexual risk-taking that included a range of factors: individual (emotion dysregulation, impulsivity), relational (attachment, communication), societal (norms, gender), and situational (dating application use, alcohol use).ġ244 young people aged 18 to 25 years (82.9% women 59.2% single, 36.0% in a monogamous relationship) participated in an online survey. Despite much investigation, there is not enough research about in-the-moment factors associated with risky sexual behaviour, such as relational and situational variables. Sexually transmitted infection rates are higher among young people relative to other age groups. We argue it is plausible that sexual encounters will eventually lead to committed relationships in a society where initiation of relationship formation with dating has been replaced by hooking up. Such findings indicate that Tinder is not “just a hookup app”, as often assumed in public discourse. Whereas more than one third of those offline encounters lead to casual sex, more than a quarter of those offline encounters result in the formation of a committed relationship. Moreover, while having conversations was positively associated with reporting having had offline Tinder encounters, less than half of our sample reported having had an offline meeting with another Tinder user. Our findings show that a user’s swiping quantity does not guarantee a higher number of Tinder matches, women have generally more matches than men and men usually have to start a conversation on Tinder. To better understand if and how the mechanics of the process Tinder imposes on its users (i.e., swiping, matching, and starting conversations) influences the resulting sexual or romantic interactions, we collected data from 1038 Belgian Tinder users.
